Differences Between Cascade, Bubble, and Sink Airlocks


1. Pressure Differential:

  • Cascade Airlock: Maintains a positive pressure differential between each airlock in the series.
  • Bubble Airlock: Maintains a positive pressure differential within the enclosed volume.
  • Sink Airlock: Maintains a negative pressure differential within the airlock.


2. Airflow:

  • Cascade Airlock: Air flows from the clean area to the non-clean area through each airlock in sequence.
  • Bubble Airlock: Air flows into the bubble through a HEPA filter, creating a positive pressure differential.
  • Sink Airlock: Air flows into the sink through a HEPA filter, creating a negative pressure differential.


3. Applications:

  • Cascade Airlock: Suitable for high-risk applications in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Bubble Airlock: Suitable for applications requiring a high degree of cleanliness, such as semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Sink Airlock: Suitable for applications requiring a high degree of cleanliness, such as pharmaceutical manufacturing.
