Advantages and Disadvantages Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI)

Advantages:

  • Accurate dose 
  • More than 100 doses in a single can
  • Drug preparation is not required
  • Short delivery time
  • Very first effect


Disadvantages:

  • Drug delivery depends on good inhaler technique
  • Have a chance of oropharyngeal deposition
  • Assembly and cleaning issue
  • Difficult to determine remaining doses
  • Device variation


Advantages and Disadvantages Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI)

Advantages:

  • Propellant free
  • Portable
  • Less patient coordination is required


Disadvantages:

  • Require drug preparation
  • Inspiratory flow dependent
  • Moisture and heat sensitivity
  • Device variation
  • Expensive compare to MDI


Difference between Metered Dose Inhaler and Dry Powder Inhaler

  • MDI is propellant based, where DPI is Lactose based (No liquid used)
  • DPI is more expensive compare to MDI
  • Comparatively more patient awareness need for MDI
